Join the Bar Build for Habitat!
Habitat homeownership provides families the opportunity to end the cycle of poverty, build equity and accumulate and transfer wealth (within families). The stability provided by safe, decent housing also stimulates advancements in education, employment and socialization (especially among children).
Each year, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity builds 13 new homes and repairs 20-30 existing homes in the community. Asheville Area Habitat has built 240 houses in Buncombe County and is currently building in West Asheville and Woodfin. The Bar Build Home is slated to be built in the Beacon Mill Village area of Swannanoa in 2013.
In 1997, the Asheville Chapter of the NC Association of Women Attorneys, sponsored the very first Habitat For Humanity Women Build House in Asheville. The Women Build project alone has provided safe, decent shelter for seven Buncombe County families, encompassing three generations of women and their families.
Raising the Money
Habitat for Humanity raises money through individuals, businesses/corporations, faith communities, foundations, the city/state and through professional association sponsorship like the Asheville Bar Build!
In addition, Habitat has three sources of sustainable income:
- Proceeds from ReStore sales help cover Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity’s administrative and fundraising expenses and provide funding for our building programs.
- Homeowner Mortgage Payments contribute nearly $500,000 to the house building budget annually.
- Deconstruction provides an additional $200,000 worth of merchandise to the ReStore annually.
